Introduction
The Masters degree in Human Resource Programme is aimed at equipping the student with the tools for acquiring advanced knowledge in the discipline offered by the Faculty of Commerce. On completion of the two-year programme, students will be able to competently analyse and apply human resource issues that relate to various organisations. The programme will prepare them for middle level and senior management careers in public, private and non-governmental sectors. They will also be able to pursue advanced post-graduate degrees in the discipline.  Â
Human Resource Management is that aspect of management that has the responsibility for achieving competitive advantage through the development of an effective workforce. This can be achieved through the full integration of human resource management activity with the core business strategies. The Faculty of Commerce has designed the programme to address the need in the public and private sectors of our country.
The programme examines the key issues for managing people as resources. This is an important and highly dynamic area of management policy and practice. It aims at developing skills and competence in students so that they contribute professionally to the management and development of human resource. The programme seeks to develop and produce graduates who are capable of demonstrating analytical approaches in the development of effective human resource management policies and practices. The programme has been designed to create and develop critical awareness and vocational ability amongst the graduates.
Goal Of The Programme
The programme aims at equipping students with the analytical and conceptual skills necessary to interpret the nature, forms and incidences of human resources management (HRM) and the key issues facing private and public sector organisations in their attempts to develop and implement HRM policies. It aims at placing the Kenyan experience of HRM in a wider regional and international context. The programme will be analytical in nature; combining lecture class discussions, case studies, work based individual and group assignments and development of research skills. The programme aims at interacting with business organizations to expose students to the real world of managing work-force.
Objectives
(a)Â Â Â The following are the objectives of the programme.
(b)Â Â Â To provide an elaborate training in management of Human Resource
(c)Â Â Â To critically analyze the human resource function in the organization and link it to business strategy
(d)Â Â Â To provide training in the management of employee relations in the organization.
(e)Â Â Â To share experience in the management of human resource in the organization.
(f)Â Â Â To appreciate the changing environments in the work place and its implications to management of organizations.
(g)Â Â Â To provide opportunities to those who want to develop career in human resource management.
(h)Â Â Â Understand organisations, their external context and their management
(i)Â Â Â To provide critical awareness of current issues in business and human resources management by leading research and practice in the field
(j)Â Â Â Enable students to acquire and analyse data and information and apply relevant knowledge to practical situations.
(k)Â Â Â Identify and respond to and facilitate organisational change as it relates to the organisation?s mission, vision and strategies.
(l)Â Â Â Enhance effective utilisation of employees and organisational work life climate
Program Structure
a)   The programme of study for the Master of Arts in Human Resources Management Degree consists of course work, examination and a research project. To be awarded an (MHRM) degree, a candidate must successfully compete fifty-three taught credit factors (CFs) and a research project which will be equivalent to 9.0 CFs. A project once started must be competed within that semester in which it is undertaken. The eighteen (18) courses consist of seventeen (17) core courses and a management seminar and one (1) elective course from the list of electives.
b)Â Â Â Each course will comprise 45 contact hours and be examined at the end of the semester by a 3 hour examination
c)Â Â Â Full time candidates shall take 18 credit factors per semester
d)   Part time candidates shall be allowed to take a minimum of 6 CFs and a maximum of fifteen (18) CFs per semester. A part time candidate will take a maximum of ten semesters (five academic years).
e)Â Â Â The minimum registration period will be two academic years.
Credit Transfer
Applicants who have completed equivalent Masters course units of other recognised universities may, with the approval of the senate be allowed to transfer credits up to 30% of required courses into their programme. Such applicants will need to make a formal request to the Director, Board of Post Graduate Studies.
Entry Requirements
a)Â Â Â The common university rules and regulations for the Masters degree specified in the Egerton University statutes shall be applicable.
b)Â Â Â In addition to (a) above,
i)Â Â Â A holder of a lower second class honours degree from a recognised university with at least two years relevant work experience or relevant professional qualifications or
ii)Â Â Â A holder of a pass degree from a recognised university with at least two years relevant work experience and relevant professional qualifications or
Rules And Regulations
The common university rules and regulations for Masters degree examinations shall be applicable.
Research Project
a)Â Â Â The research project can only be undertaken after successfully competing all the fifty three credit factors including seminar
b)Â Â Â (i)Â Â Â For purpose of the examination regulations, the research project
shall carry nine (9) credit factors.
(ii)   A candidate shall not be allowed to work on a research project for more than two semesters. Any re-submission must be done within the two semesters.
c)Â Â Â Candidates shall be required to submit supervised research project for examination at least three (3) weeks before end of the semester in which it is to be examined.
d)   The research project will be assessed out of 100%. The pass mark for the research project shall be fifty percent (50%).
e)Â Â Â A candidate, who fails in the research project may on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Examiners and approval of Senate, be allowed to re-submit the project for examination once only but within the stipulated period of ten (10) semesters.
f)Â Â Â A pass obtained in the re-submission of a research project shall be recorded as 50% in the candidate?s academic record.
g)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the re-submission of the research project or fails to complete their study within the stipulated period of 10 semesters shall on recommendation of the Faculty Board to Examiners and approval of Senate be discontinued.
Maintenance Status
If a student has to interrupt his/her study for a semester, he/she has to inform the Chairman of the Department, the Dean of the Faculty and the Director of the Board of Graduate studies in writing at least two (2) weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which he/she wishes to resume studies.
Course Coding
The course code are four capital letters namely, MHRM standing for masters in Human, Resource Management, followed by three digits.
1st digit indicates year or level the course is offered, i.e 7 for MHRM year one and 8 for MHRM year Two. The 2nd and 3rd digits indicate the sequencing of the courses.
